Remembering Charles Darwin

A man who undoubtedly deserves to be talked about in superlatives. A genius who changed the face of Life Sciences with his Life-time accomplishments,Charles Robert Darwin, was born on 12th February,1809 in England. His Father was a Doctor who had labelled him as a worthless person. His teachers had considered him  ‘Unintelligent’. But he, ultimately, had drawn the Attention of the entire world upon him with his astonishing writings. These include ‘The Origin of Species’ in which he proposed the Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection. This has become more like a ‘Bible’ in the History of Life Sciences. Perhaps no one has influenced our knowledge of Life on Earth as much as Charles Darwin. This theory explained where all of the astonishingly diverse kinds of Living Beings came from and how they became exquisitely adapted to their particular environments. His theory reconciled a host of diverse kinds of evidence such as the progressive nature of fossil forms in the geological record, the geographical distribution of species, recapitulative appearances in embryology, homologous structures, vestigial organs and nesting taxonomic relationships. No other explanation before or since has made sense of these facts.

In further works, Darwin demonstrated that the difference between humans and other animals is one of degree, not kind. In Geology, Zoology, Taxonomy, Botany, Palaeontology, Philosophy, Anthropology, Psychology, Literature and Theology Darwin’s writings produced profound reactions, many of which are still ongoing.

Fortunately, today I got to see an article about Darwin in a Local Newspaper(in my Local language,Telugu) and have come to know many more facts about this Genius. It says that during his childhood, his father used to hate him very much and considered him to be mischievous because he used to neglect his studies and spend the entire time in collecting the Butterflies, Caterpillars and Cockroaches and studying about them. Despite being joined in a Medical School in Edinborough, he discontinued it. Later, on his father’s desire to finish up with any degree, he  joined the course of Philosophy in Cambridge University and neglected it too. One day, one of his professors introduced him to the Captain of a Ship called ‘Beagle’. Darwin got an idea that he could get the chance of studying the living beings in various countries and islands. He boarded the ship against his father’s willing. Thereby, he studied about various plants, rocks, fossils, insects and animals of various places on earth and these studies led him to propose the theory of Evolution of Living Species in his famous book ‘The Origin of Species’. This 150 years old book still remains promising in the history of Life Sciences.

I, being a Science student, would be delighted to share this information about this Great Naturalist with you.
